Any suggestions n visiting the island during xmas and new years?

Things to do in december - are snorkeling and scuba diving possible in december?

Where to stay ?

Weather conditions - will rain ruin the plans?

We've been to Avalon several times for their big New Year's celebration at the casino. The last time we went (several years ago), it rained quite a lot and they cancelled the ferry due to high winds and rough seas the day we were supposed to go back. We rented a fabulous condo at Hamilton Cove and it had a fire place so we did not mind staying that extra day. The weather can be sunny and warm or cold and rainy. As for SCUBA, you will need a wetsuit any time of year. I'm not sure I would snorkel in December without a wet suit. The water will be very cold.

Just wanted to comment again. As an example of the weather here in So Cal. It was sunny and quite warm yesterday (mid-70s). I woke up today to cloudy, dark skies and the high is in the 50's. It will be raining tonight. This is typical this time of year.

Thank you folks for the inputs.

Avalon is better or two harbors? which place has more stuff to do in December.

Is rental car needed or the whole island can be managed with public transportation?

Avalon is the main (small) town, Two Harbors is very small. You should look up traveling on the island on the Santa Catalina Island Company's website, because cars are limited on the island and permits are needed for backcountry travel.

Two Harbos is very remote and it's quite aways from Avalon. Your best option Avalon; very few boats go to Two Harbors in the winter months anyway. There is one restaurant and B&B in Two Harbors. That's about it.

There is no rental car options on the island. The town of Avalon can be seen by walking and you can also rent a golf cart by the hour to see other areas of the town. You cannot get past the gate into the interior without a permit. If you want to see the interior, you would need to book a group or private tour. You can also take the conservancy van or the Safari Bus to the airport. The Safari also goes to Two Harbors.
