Catalina Island - travel with one year old

We'll be traveling to Catalina Island in 2 weeks with our one year old daughter. We are renting a condo at Hamilton Cove.

Is there a decent size grocery store in Avalon where will we be able to buy basic baby supplies like diapers and baby food to avoid having to pack them? Or just small places that would be very limited?

This is a long shot, but does anyone know of a way to rent a crib/pack and play on the island?

Any other advice for fun, child friendly things to do there?

Our condo comes with a golf cart, but I'm not sure it is safe to ride with a one year old. Is the driving safe on the island? Any advice on having small children on golf carts?

The are two VONS Stores (Safeway Company) that are the only Grocery Stores on the island, and yes, you can find a limited supply of brands, but all the basics you need. (Note, these are small grocery stores, not supermarkets.) The stores are only a couple blocks from each other, the second store was added to increase the amount of size they had on the island. (Wasn't practicial to expand the first store).

One hint, VONS does honor the weekly ad prices for all Southern California Stores, but all other items tend to have a higher price due to having to be shipped to the Island.

One more thing, if you do not have a Safeway Family Tracking Card, make sure and sign up for the VONS Club at the register, as it can save you quite a bit of money.

Avalon is a normal small town, people who live there have babies, so every supply you need would be in the grocery store.

Baby Equipment Rentals here:

buenavistacatalina.com/babyequipmentrentals/

Island Golf Carts will give you the information you request. There is a map to see the streets you can drive your golf car on. You do need to have a car or booster seat for your 1 year old.

I know you will have use of a cart from Hamilton Cove, but here is the information on car seats.

"You should also reserve a child seat which is required for child travel ( State law requires children under age 6 or less than 60 pounds be in a child car seat. )"

Yes, driving is safe, there is a speed limit, mostly golf carts to get around. You will not be driving around the island, just some streets in Avalon, etc. on the yellow marked roads.

When my kids were that little, we stayed at Hamilton Cove and I brought their car seats. Most of the golfA carts at Hamilton Cove will have seat belts and it was just safer to have them strapped in at that age. Most of the folks drive very slowly but the path to and from Hamilton Cove does have a few steep areas. I was also going to recommend the same baby rental place as CANative did.
