Catalina Island for 12/31

My husband and I will be in Long Beach, and we have 12/31 "free". Would it be worth our while to travel to Catalina Island for the day? We want to be back by late afternoon. What would you suggest we do? We are 60 years old, in good shape, and love to see new things.

Thanks,

Deb Haas

I wouldn't go in winter, just too cold on the water and probably too quiet on the island. What else do you have on your itinerary? There are so many great places to go and things to do in the greater Los Angeles area! I would post your question on the Los Angeles forum for some ideas, or go to the LA forum page and check out Things to Do.

I agree with PlumeriaD. It would be too cold this time of year for a day visit. A trip there and back the same day could be rough on the water. You could wait to see what the weather will be like on NYE the closer to your holiday. We had strong winds and rain the other night and I wouldn't want to be on a boat, even for an hour.

Hi dhletsgo,

Catalina Island is really never "too cold" to visit. I live on the Island, and it was in the high 70's today! December weather can be variable, but the average for this time of the year is 50's/low 60's. Even if on the cooler side, Catalina is worth seeing, and there are plenty of enclosed activities. You could visit our museum, go on an enclosed undersea submarine tour, a tour on a bus to the interior of the island to see buffalo and other wildlife (along with breathtaking scenery!) or have a great lunch inside, overlooking the water. Catalina Island is not just beaches- there is a lot of history, and beautiful vistas. There will be fun NYE activities going on as well, including an amazing Gala affair in the Casino Ballroom (and you MUST see the casino when you visit!): …catalinachamber.com/External/…

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I had given up thoughts of traveling to Catalina Island for a day, but now I may reconsider. Thanks so much for sharing some information about your "slice of life"!

We are traveling as part of a local high school band which will be performing in the Rose Bowl Parade. We are staying in Long Beach. We are going to Disneyland for a day, the Aquarium of the Pacific for an evening, the parade for a day, Band Fest and seeing the floats "before" the parade. We have one day "on our own" and I am trying to figure out what to do.

Know one can predict weather, but the weather the last few days has been amazing. Better than we get in the summer. Ocean has been beautiful
