Driving from Rome to Siena via coast ... BEACHES?

We would like to spend a day/night between Rome & Siena, relaxing & swimming at an accessible (parking) beach. Suggestions?

What time of year?

It's quite a detour to take the coastal route, but it can be done.

My favourite beach is relatively close to Rome, Santa Severa

Tarquinia also has a large beach and the town has a lot more to offer- it's a real hill town with some of the best sights in Italy, the Etruscan tombs.

Thank you! Forgot to say that it will be in August (yes, we know things will be packed). I've actually looked at Tarquinia a few times -- is it easy to get to a beach with parking there?

well, there's plenty of parking... but on the middle of the day in August it will all be full and you may have to walk quite a while. Either come early or late.

There are more beaches north of Pescara Romana- we never have a problem parking there, but again, it will be full.

You can stay in Tarquinnia di Lido which is the seaside part. It's just a couple of kilometres back to get into town.

Porto S. Stefano is also a favourite with Romans.

Morning dancemore,

If you want an unspoilt beach on your trip consider Marina di Alberese - just North of Orbetello/ South of Grosseto.

It's a public beach on the edge of a Natural Park. You drive through part of the Park to get to the long, sandy beach which is backed by one of the last significant coastal umbrella pine forests. It is a really relaxing place and very different from the usual serried ranks of loungers.

We have visited this beach half a dozen times - but only in September. I know that August will be busier. However, once you're on the beach you have several miles to choose from.
