Return from Kyoto to Narita for 8:30pm flight

From Shinjuku we plan to take the train to Shinagawa station and catch the Shinkansen to Kyoto. We hope to buy these tickets at JR Shinjuku Station.

Some in the group have to fly home 5 days later from Kyoto.

Is there any advantage for them to prepurchase tickets at Shinjuku Station for their return trip to the airport i.e. tickets for the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Shinagawa and the connecting N'EX train tickets from Shinagawa to Narita?

I understand that with Shinkansen tickets you can always hop on the next one if you miss it. What happens if you miss the N'EX express? Will the pre purchased tickets still be valid on the next train?

All help much appreciated.

There are 2 of us in our party :)

Ok, I need your help to decide what to get.

We are taking a bus from Narita to our hotel in Tokyo (The Peninsula)

We are staying in Tokyo for 2 days.

On the 3rd day we need to take the train to Yokohama

We cruise for 9 days then return to Yokohama pier

We need to take the train to Kyoto

We stay in Kyoto for 2 days

We need to take the train to Narita airport

What do you recommend for the trains we need to take?

Is this something we can purchase in advance from the US?

Thank you

You will probably want to get the "normal" train fares that locals get. Not need purchase JR Pass in the States.

2 days in Kyoto means ONE night?? You might want to opt for a "tour." japanican.com/en/…shinkansen

The train to Kyoto will be Shinkansen.

You can find train schedules at www.hyperdia.com

Buses to the Peninsula.

limousinebus.co.jp/en/…64

Your cruise terminal in Yokohama.

You can take the Shinkansen to Yokohama, then change to the Narita Express 'NEX).

2 days in Kyoto means 2 nts. We arrive Wed and depart Friday.

So are you saying that it's best to take the train back to Yokohama and from there we can take the NEX to Narita airport instead of going through Tokyo or Shinagawa?

Change at Shinagawa. Yokohama is not a Shinkansen stop, while Shin-Yokohama is not a NEX stop.

Thank you Sammyfloyd. So which train would we take from Yokohama to Kyoto if it's not a Shinkansen stop? Do you know which train terminal in Yokohama?

TravelLovers, you can take a taxi to Yokohama station from the cruise pier, then take the subway (Blue line, 11 minutes) to Shin Yokohama to catch the Shinkansen to Kyoto.

From Kyoto, take the Shinkansen to Shinagawa and transfer to NEX.

The Shinkansen to Kyoto stops at Shin-Yokohama. The main train station that's near the cruise port is Yokohama. Yokohama and Shin-Yokohama (which means "new Yokohama") are different stations. To get to Shin-Yokohama, there are many options, depending on the time of the day. You can catch the subway from Yokohama (easy and comes often)....or you could take the JR Yokohama Line (express) or transfer a couple of times from the Minato-Mirai line to the JR Yokohama Line (local). The subway would probably be the easiest for you. Check www.hyperdia.com Type in Yokohama in "from" and Shin-Yokohama in "to."

Here's a "train map" of the Yokohama area.

Here's a map of Tokyo as compared to the cruise ship terminal.

It's possible to walk to the closest station, Nihon Odori, from the port and take the train to Yokohama, but it will probably be easier to take a taxi to Yokohama. If you aren't comfortable with the idea of taking the subway, you can even take a taxi to Shin-Yokohama station.
