If you want to do the Omo villages/tribes etc in south it has to be by road and needs absolute min 7 days better 10/12.

To do the northern historic route by plane 6-8 days;fully by road double that.

Mixture of flights/buses say 10 days.

You will see "natural highlights on the 2 trips" eg Blue Nile Gorge and falls.

To see Simien Mountains must be by road between Gondar/Axum or day triop from Gondar.

Overall 3 weeks needed to do it all....

Try looking at people's trip reports on Thorntree Ethiopia and Bradt Ethiopia Updates page - has a good index.

Just seen you june post in Africa forum.

You need a guide/tour company for Omo; but not vital for northern trip especially if you use Skybus for leg 1 then fly 3 legs.

hi there,

three weeks would be enough for your travel in Ethiopia, Both south cultural and north Historical part. And of course possible also to visit some important national parks on your way such as, Nech Sar National Park, Abiyata Shalla, and Semien National park for best panoramic and Trekking. The important thing is get a well experienced tour operator as well as Guide to enjoy your trip.

As above said to the north Historical route you no need a tour operator you can just do it by your self using public transport and domestic flights. if you choose your interests what to visit and what you wanted to do, then organizing the tour would be easy.

Good luck,

Tommy

PS: if you need a sample itinerary I can send you or post it here so that you can have an Idea.

If you are going to do any walking in the Simien mountains, I can recommend this company: www.walksethiopia.com . I have been walking with one of the guides and he is lovely and very organised.

I'm planning to travel in Ethiopia in may also, and plan to do approximately 10 day tour in the south around mid May. Looking for someone to join me to share costs.

Definitely 3 weeks! We spent 11 days in the north (flew to Bahir Dar, 2 days there; drove to Gondar (2 days there), drove to Simien Mts (2 days) and back to Gondar where we flew to Axum for one day, then to Lalibela, where we spent 2 days. Then we flew to Addis, where we got our driver to drive south for 8 days. The north has more history, while the south has the tribes. It is a great mix and no way would I have missed any of it. I just wish I'd had an extra week to do more drives in the north and to spend more time in the Axum and Lalibela areas. Do you need suggestions for guides?
