trails San Gerardo de Dota

Hello,

has anyone any experience with birdwatching/nature exploration in San Gerardo de Dota? I am mainly wondering to which extent you require a lodge/hotel which offers a private reserve, or are there many options for trails which are open to the public? Any advice on a low-key lodge or other place to stay, preferably family run place which does not cater for large groups and is not a resort-style thing...

Not in San Gerardo de Dota, but still in the same quetzal country is located Quetzal's Paradise www.quetzalsparadise.com a Tico family run small lodge with its own network of trials, exactly the type of place you have described.

Dantica Lodge! Beautiful! Trails on their private reserve are only for guests. Lights on the trails for a brief period of time after dark. Four CST Leafs!!!

Just past Savegre lodge you have access to a trail that leads to a waterfall with good birding all the way. You can pull off and park on the side of the road and go through a gate and over a small bridge and then past a trout hatchery. At the back of the hatchery they have Quetzal nesting boxes that are usually active from early March until May. Other than the lodges there are several small places that offer rooms but I have no idea what they are like. Mirian's, located near Dantica lodge offers some small rooms and a fantastic little restaurant that we love- the fresh trout and chicken are wonderful and very reasonably priced.Behind the restaurant they have a feeder that attracts lots of birds and you can hike down some small trails that snake down the hill. If you go about 10km past the cutoff to San Gerardo de Dota on Hwy 2 you come to La Georgina, a bus stop/ restaurant/ boarding house that has feeders that attract hundreds of hummingbirds and has a garden and trails behind it- worth a visit to see the fiery throated hummers that are common here.
