Hi
My hubby and I have narrowed our search to mandavara or the Novotel but now we can't decide between the two. We will be visiting as a family with our 10 year old daughter.
Which should we choose?

We have stayed at the Mandarava many times, love it there. Off the main road a tad, with an excellent restaurant and massage just down the road, Sabaijai and Frutta respectively. Don't ask for a Tropicana room, it is ground level, which is not all that great in a jungle/small pool setting. Any other room is wonderful. Around the Pomelo or Papaya pool in a panoramic room will be a little more laid back than around the largest Mango pool, but without paying for an upgrade to a Seafan room by the Banana pool.
Novotel - have not stayed there but know exactly where it is. On the main road into Karon and further away from the town/beach, also part of a chain. Because of that, if the Mandarava was unavailable, I would stay elsewhere (return to Phuket Marina for example), but we would not look at Novotel.
Groupon had a deal a couple of weeks ago when I last looked for 4 nights Mandarava and 4 at their sister hotel in Khao Lak, the Moracea, with transfer between the two included, etc - might be worth a look.
Thank you so much for your detailed reply will take a look at groupon.
A friend showed us the katathani online last night and now I'm totally confused which to go for between mandavara and katathani!!
Hi, haven't stayed at Katathani but have been there and looked around. Looks nice and right on the beach, which the Mandarava is not. Only thing - it is right at the end of the road, which might limit your walking options a little if you want to go out at night to Kata or Karon (next to Kata). Either of these hotels would be unlikely to disappoint. Enjoy.
Edited: 6 years agoAlso while you are having a look at Groupon Travel also have a look at Scoopon Travel. Prices in $AUD but anyone can buy. Some really good deals on there but as always, have a look at Trip Advisor reviews for anywhere before you book. Enjoy.
I would avoid Katathani unless you're willing to pay the premium in order to stay on the beach side of the road/resort. I have stayed at Movenpick in Karon. Excellent choice for families and very well located.
I do not dismiss chain hotels simply because it's a chain hotel. That seems very much OTT but each to their own. One of the best resorts in Phuket that I have stayed at (several times) is the Holiday Inn Resort, Phuket.
The Novotel Karon seems like a solid choice for a good standard family resort.
Cheers
Stayed at Novotel , staff are amazing , stunning hotel grounds and great pools , pool bar , the food , the service , couldn't fault anything would highly recommend.
We are currently at the mandarava and it's amazing.. We were fortunate to be upgraded to a coral view room..
We are also currently looking. Eliminated Katathani due to being a bit more isolated. Also the kids club looks great for little kids, but not older kids. We have a 7 and 10 year old. Are considering a plunge pool suite. Kids beds can be closed off in living room whilst we have our room. Tv in both rooms. And own plunge pool!! Kids club has some activities for older kids too. May have to pay a surcharge for some activities.
There is a good deal for the Mamdarava on Scoopon now.
