Driving through the alps in winter.

Hello! I am planning on renting a car and driving from Milan through the French and Swiss alps and back through Austria. I am a beginner/ descent at skiing and am looking for some advice. I will be travelling on a medium budget with my husband and need some help choosing where I should skii, sleep, and pass through. I love discovering new places and don't need to necessarily stay at a fancy place as long as it's cute. Any ideas?? Thanks so much! Nicholette

You will have to do some research, as most of the alpine passes are closed until the middle of May. You may be forced to use the major ones that are used by the autoroutes. Note: In Austria, you must first purchase a "vignette" BEFORE driving on their highways. This is a road tax (sort of) and does NOT replace tolls. There is a E100 fine for not having one. You must buy them at gas stations for example BEFORE you get on the toll roads. Your best information for this will be on the Austrian Forum.
