September winery visits

Hi! I am looking for wine-tasting and winery visits for a one-day trip to Sonoma around September18. We will also be visiting Armstrong Woods, so proximity to that would be good. I am especially interested in beautiful vineyards and maybe seeing the harvest/ vineyard tour (since that is unique to that time of year), but keeping down our costs. Thanks!

Westside Road Wineries are close to Armstrong - head west out of Healdsburg area.

For lunch you might like the deli at Korbel.

Westside Road is a pretty area as it is along the Russian River area.

From Korbel Deli to Armstrong is about 15 minutes

From the table area you will see redwoods - and thus get you in the mood for wonderful Armstrong State Park.

On the route I like Gary Farrell Winery (although Gary himself sold the wineries several years back ....so you will not find Gary there)

Hop Kiln is great to stop at for some pictures

Great suggestions! Thanks. I know that Korbel is right on the way to Armstrong Woods and that could be a great spot for lunch. Any other dining suggestions nearby?

Also, will there be grape harvesting around 9/18? I had read that Benziger gives a fun and interesting tour, in glen Ellen, but is that a distance away--maybe something closer to Healdsburg?--or is there someplace that gives great tours that is really worth it?

I have heard several suggestions for Gundlach-Bunschu, Syrahgirl, so looks like that one has to go on the list. Is it a far drive from Armstrong woods?

GunBun is in Sonoma and a ways from the Armstrong Redwoods.

Simi Winery does a nice tour.

No one can really say when harvest will be. It depends on veraison , the grape varietal, sugar level, etc. They are expecting an early harvest this year though, so you may be in luck :)

Is there a good website or just visitor center that might tell if there will be harvest tours?

Most likely when you're here, they'll be picking the bulk of the whites - some have just started (the ones I know that are picking are for sparkling wines). Not sure if anyone sponsors any harvest tours, but I would check in with any of the cities Chambers of Commerce. Sonoma, Santa Rosa, Healdsburg. Or visit the Santa Rosa Convention & Visitors Bureau: http://www.visitsantarosa.com/
