where best to stay in the Hakuba area for restaurants

We are a family of 5 adults looking to get an apartment in the Hakuba area where we can catch a shuttle bus to the ski lifts etc but also have access to restaurants and bars for when we aren't ski-ing and a supermarket as we won't have a car. Can anyone suggest the best area to stay?

thank you

Hakuba is really spread out. Then there are about 8 remote ski areas & a commercial area near the railway. ATM's are only at the Post Office (business hours) & the 7Eleven store. Everything is connected by the free ski shuttles (day) or the night shuttle (Genki-Go) cost 300yen or taxis. Happo is conveniently located for skiing. Nightlife is developing in the Echoland area.

I travelled to Hakuba in March 2014 for the 1st time. I have the copied the link (tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g1120615-i14348…) that I wrote on trip advisor. We originally looked at self contained apartments, but glad we choose a B & B like Snowlines lodge. The hosts make your trip so much more enjoyable by providing service and tips you don't receive in a self contained apartments.

You can walk to Echoland or Happo within 10 mins, no matter where you stay, so don't be too concerned that you may not stay in the right spot. Mark

tks Mark - just another quick question. When you returned to Tokyo did you catch the bullet train and if so did you organise from there. Just wondering if we need to make bookings ahead of time or just wait until we arrive.

cheers

I know this might be a bit late

We went in Jan this year. 5 of us.2 adults and 3 teenagers and stayed in Echoland ( bus ride from Happo)-not a great choice-The shuttle bus service is terrible (not frequent enough and always crowded in bus with people and their skis).Echoland has some restaurants but little choice and expensive.Nothing to do if you want a day off.Skiing at all the resorts which are accessible by shuttle are really good,The snow is fabulous

If we went again we would stay right in Happo as there are plenty of places to stay that are ski in and ski out. There is the village type atmosphere there with plenty of places to eat( not European village type but ok)
