5 Days on Sunshine Coast

Hi,

We are looking to stay on the Sunshine Coast for about 5 nights in the September school holidays. We would prefer to be on or very near the beach and near shops/restaurants as we won't have a car for most of our stay. The kids (12 & 8) are keen to go to Australia Zoo, so that is a consideration for where we stay. Price wise around $250 - $300 per night is fine We will fly our of Maroochydore airport to come home.

Hope someone can give us some ideas.

Thanks

Caloundra is a reasonable place to stay. Plenty of beaches to chose from, but if you are flying out of Maroochydore perhaps you should look at Mooloolaba. Kids might also like the aquarium there.

Hi Natalea,

I'll say to you what I say to everyone...Cotton Tree, Cotton Tree, Cotton Tree. There are lots of holiday units here and it is so close to Maroochydore for shopping, also there's lots of cafes, restaurants, shops, the beach and river. Cotton Tree park is lovely and has BBq facilities right next to river. The main street is blocked off every Sunday for Markets too.

Australia Zoo has a free bus just contact them to find out pick up details.

Mooloolaba isn't too far away... short taxi ride ( don't know much about buses there ) for Underwater World, more cafes, shops and beach.. and of course the famous " loo with a view" is there!! There's a lovely pathway all along the water front from Cotton Tree to Mooloolaba if the kids are into walking!! Could take up to an hour with lots of stops along the way.

Have a great holiday.

Caloundra in my opinion is more kid orientated than say Mooloolaba and the closest beach to Australia Zoo which is back out on the highway from Caloundra and a bit south and off the highway near Beerwah. Mooloolaba is more central to all of the beaches whereas from Caloundra you'd have a bit of a drive along a back road to Mooloolaba. You could get a bus I am sure. There are highrises all along the beaches of the Sunshine coast. Some with views, some partial views and some with no views of course and so you get what you pay for and in school holidays prices soar. Caloundra is not as close to Maroochydore airport as Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headland (no close shopping centre), Maroochydore and Cotton Tree.

The beaches run from south to north . Caloundra, a bit of a distance to Mooloolaba, which abuts Alexandra Headland , Maroochydore with Cotton Tree and then further north beaches also.

I have a review of Caloundra when we stayed at Golden Beach area for a long weekend. Golden Beach is not Caloundra proper and around along Pumistone Passage which is calm water. Therefore it is a bit of a walk into town. Ensure if you are getting accomodation in Caloundra that you are near the centre of the town and on the water if possible.

Mooloolaba is more central to it's shops if you are close to the water but will be noisy at night if right in the thick of it during school holidays. Has a nice surf lifesavers club looking over the beach and surf where you can get meals. Outdoor eateries and a good fish and chip shop down the end where you can sit at picnic tables to enjoy. Few boutiques also. More the trendy area. Not an extremely big shopping centre though, on the waterfront.

Being so close together, you could get buses along to other beaches

Here is a link for Sun Bus which runs around the Sunshine Coast. This is from Caloundra to Mooloolaba. So you'd need to be close to the bus route and therefore preferrably close to the central areas. Hope this helps.

We've stayed in an ocean view room at Breakfree Grand Pacific Resort in Caloundra, great spot at Bulcock Beach, with restaurants and shops all very close.

Great spot for children and adults.

Try the local ~Real Estate agent at Cotton Tree. Holiday rentals apartments opposite the beach, bakeries, supermarket etc just round corner. 20 min walk to shopping mall. Reasonable prices, on the bus route, near the information/booking office. Coach company nearby.

Transfers from the airport.
