1 week along sunshine coast in March- top things to see

We are traveling in Australia in mid March - meeting our daughter and boyfriend who will want to dive, we would like to snorkel. We will have 1 week along the east coast - and will fly in and rent a car. What are the highlights north of brisbane - know we can't get as far as Cairns, but would like to try to hit the highlights of sea and land. Can anyone give us some tips? My daughter is 25, and we are active 50 yo. Thanks very much!

There is the HMAS Brisbane dive site off Caloundra but if you were hoping for a taste of the Great Barrier Reef then unfortunately we are too far south. There are some dive and snorkelling companies that base themselves out of Mooloolaba so perhaps try google if there are no responses from those who have done this.

For some ideas have a look at

for an area not to far north of the sunshine coast for good snorkling try lady elliot or Heron Islands.....a google search should bring them up.

The HMAS Brisbane is actually off Mooloolaba Not Caloundra, Check out Sun Reef Dive Centre in Mooloolaba for the Diving. If you want to snorkle you can do that off 1770 or Agnes Waters, a really quiet, quaint little town with a nice feel about it. You can snorkle off Lady Musgrave Island, which is lovely and not very expensive.

Highlights of the Sunshine Coast are the beautiful beaches and friendly country towns and scenic national parks.... Save your snorkelling for the Great Barrier reef off Cairns.

The Sunshine Coast region starts about one hour's drive north of Brisbane (Caloundra at the Southern end) and extends about an hour north (Noosa at the Northern end).

Within the region there is plenty to keep you going for a week, including

-Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo (Beerwah)

-Beaches (Learn to Surf schools, fishing, 4wd beach tours etc)

-Sunshine Coast hinterland (Montville, Maleny, Mapleton)

Slightly further north is also Fraser Island, a beautiful place in the region.

If you are reluctant to head too far north to snorkel, another possibility is Moreton Island. Moreton Island is about 1-2 hours boat ride from Brisbane, and they have snorkel tours there everyday. Google Tangalooma resort for more info on the area. No great barrier reef but still a beautiful place. The reviews on here about Tangalooma Resort are true - don't go there expecting 5 star resort luxury. But if you go there with 3 stars in mind and can pick up a last minute/good price for accom, it's definitely worth a visit.

Happy travels! :)
