Renting a boat to go up the gorges du verdon

We would like to rent boat to go up the gorge du verdon. Where is the best place to do this? It seems we'll be able to go farther if we rent a boat with an electric motor, or would the pedalo boats or canoes be fine? How far up the river can you go? Are there safety issues? We will be staying in moustiers de ste Marie .

You should be able to rent a pedalo in Les Salles sur Verdon (there's a bus there in summer from Moustiers). You can go in it up the gorges as far as the first waterfall!

Thanks so much. About how long of a "pedal" is the first waterfall? Is that as far as you can go in any kind of boat? Are there places to rent the electric motor boats anywhere?

Hello,

You can rent small electric motor boats in Quison:

There are paths along much of the gorge BUT they are no tourist stroll. You need to be a serious hiker, very fit and properly equipped, and have a thorough understanding of all the dangers involved including heat stroke, exhaustion, snakes and, not least, the possibility of sudden flooding if the hydro-electric scheme starts running.

You cannot go very far upstream with a pedalo boat.In the summer, the river might be busy.

You can easily find boats on both sides of the Galetas bridge.

On the other side of the lake,The Basses Gorges "low Verdon" is another option offering a quieter atmosphere.First, the narrow Baudinard gorges with several caves, right after the Ste Croix Dam.

The other section from Quinson to Esparron lake and village is nice too.

I am planning a trip to Provence in late October. Are you still able to rent boats or tour the gorge by boat in October?

You can't TOUR the Gorge by boat. There is a very large lake immediately downstream of the gorge and that is where the boats are. They are able to go a very short distance into the mouth of the gorge but that isn't where it is spectacular. Further up, the Gorge is extremely deep but incredibly narrow at the bottom - that is the spectacular bit and the gorge itself there is only accessible to very experienced, fit and well-equipped hikers.
