See at http://www.vuokatti.fi/en/home/ under heading "activities".

Distance to the centre of Sotkamo is some 7 km and to Kajaani 30 km. Nearest cultural events (theatre etc.) will be in Kajaani.

Thank you very much for your swift response. What sort of cultural events can we expect in Kajaani, as we do not understand Finnish, such as music (folk, classical, jazz,) etc. Also what points of interest are in the area. intereting villages, sites?

There really aren't too many notable places around there. However, Kajaani is by a very large lake Oulujärvi which in places scenic wise resembles more a sea than a lake: http://www.oulujarvi.fi/?q=en/node/1 . Info on Kajaani and its surroundings can be found at http://www.visitkajaani.fi/index.php?c_la=en .

On the 19th of May at 19 - 20:30 Kajaani Music Insitute will have a spring concert in the Kaukametsä Hall (mostly classical music, free admission). Kajaani theatre has also a puppet play Canine Kalevala based on Mauri Kunnas' children's book of the same name ( maurikunnas.net/mauri_kunnas/… ). The play should have a lot of music.

Thank you very much for this important imformation. The concert and lake sounds very interesting. With some difficulty I am starting to find things in the area. As we will have vehicle for our use, we will be able to travel even greater distances.

Your suggestions are most useful. If you have anything else, please let me know.

Hi,

I agree that the tip for Oulujärvi-lake is great. But as if you have a car to drive, here´s some more tips:

1) Beautiful landscapes, nice easy or heavier hiking starting from 3 km round-tour, Hiidenportti National Park

2)Guided bear-watching near russian border

3) Exhibition of Kalevala -influenced arts in Kuhmo (45 min drivefrom Vuokatti)

Although May is low-season in Vuokatti and whole Kainuu-region, there is surely a lot to see & do for you! Welcome to Kainuu and Vuokatti !

For a day trip you could drive around lake Pielinen. Visit eg Bomba Karelian village and Juuka World of stone and see one of the finest scenery on top of Koli mountain.

What if one travels there in late August and does not plan to rent a car? Also is it better to stay in the cottage or hotel at Holiday Club Katinkulta with 2 people?

Without car you should stay either at the Holiday Club some cottage or apartment very near it. There's a spa at the hotel. Other activities available are various forms of sports, like tennis and golf. And then of course just enjoying the nature with long walks or cycling.

Tempereatures will be some degrees on the plus side. It's very much spring time so no natural snow expected - maybe some last patches on the downhill slopes. But they have a cross country skiing tunnel there!

vuokatti.fi/en/Accommodation/Hotels/Hotellit…

That tunnel is about 5km from Katinkulta. There are no big signs leading to it, but it's the same complex where there is Intersport store.

Best restaurants there are probably at Katinkulta or Sokos Hotel (quite close to the skiing tunnel). Vegetarian options are limited but there should always be some. Supermarket S-Market a short walk from Katinkulta.

You could also try the Sport Hotel restaurant. At least their breakfast was great (lots of healthy options). vuokattisport.fi/sport_hotel_en/home-sport-h…
