Elafonissi and Balos

Is it worth a trip here from GP? We dont drive so would need to book a trip and am not sure if we can get one locally of if we need to start from Chania. Not really keen on one of those all day boat trips with swimming and BBQ etc. Has anyone any info/tips.advice? Any info much appreciated. x

For Balos, your only real option without a car is the day trip including the boat to Gramvousa and Balos.

For Elafonisi, from (probably) 12/5 there is a bus from Chania, but it would be an early start from G'opolis:

Of the 2, Balos would be my first choice every time...

We've prearranged a car tour to Balos for our upcoming trip (leaving next week). We don't wish to drive either and we also were not keen on the boat tour. We'll be based in Chania. We were originally going to hike from Kissamou but the walk would have been along the dirt road and not exactly appealing as a hike.

The plan is that we will be picked up early at our hotel in Chania in the a.m. and driven to the parking area at the farthest point on the peninsula, and then hike down to Balos which takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Afterwards (about 4-5 hours) we'll hike back up and meet the driver to be driven back to Chania which should mean we will miss most of the invading hordes off the boat. We can report back as to how is went when we get back, if you are interested. It will be a bit expensive but we did not want to waste time with bus connections, taxis and logistics, and did not want to be part of the large crowd invading the beach

Steve - glad to hear that Balos gets the vote. We couldn't decide which of the two beaches to visit (we will be in Paleochora so a trip to Elafonisi is possible) and Balos looks so spectacular.
