Glorious sounds

What a special weekend, though the rain has been off/on the choir and singing from the church in Arch do Calheta has been magical, a band and a DJ in the square adds to the mix. We understand that it is a special religious occasion with the streamers/lights and the fireworks but haven't been able to find any other information. We are now listening to our second service of the weekend with the sun finally breaking. Beautiful.

we are happy that you are enjoying the Winter Festas and entertainment in Calheta region..believe it was the Festa de São Brás

Think today at 7:30 pm there is the mass of the vigil of the feast of São Brás and more entertainment throughout the afternoon and evening.

Madeirapaul,

Thank you, appreciate being able to further research the festival. We are at a Villa just east of the church and the music and singing are beautiful. The fireworks started Friday evening and continue still. The speakers in the Bell Tower have enabled us to hear the festivities all weekend.

Madeira Paul, I would appreciate information on the local festivals and celebrations. It was good to see the procession pictures we missed those elements of the weekend. We were aware of preparations in the square but with limited Portuguese it is difficult to find out particulars. As Madeira and the village of Arco do Calheta wil be our winter home for future years would appreciate knowing more.

dates and times of all events festas or not are now published online for example on social media networks such as Facebook. Before only the locals knew and little was published in newspapers. To see the details online you have to be connected to the individuals who post these details and of course it's in Portuguese. And many of the Facebook pages only post images after the festa/event!

Our tip is if you see the village or any village with decorations/bunting ..ask in a bar or shop what is the name of the event and the time of the service/procession. If there is a stage which there usually always is and stalls..there is going to be entertainment and food and drink!

One of the best lists of all the festas in Calheta region is the one on the site of the Calheta Council/Local Government which may have been published in 2012. It does clearly state most of the Festas which village, town they are celebrated in and the date.

Forgot to mention that the list does not list one of the best Festas in Madeira!...a seafood festival in the fishing village/surfspot of Paul do Mar in the fishing harbour/historical centre of the village.

This Festa is usually 3 days and nights, Friday to Sunday night one weekend in July.
