This is a question that gets asked a lot. Antigua doesn't have the best off-beach snorkelling in the Caribbean - you really do need to take a boat trip out to one of the reefs for a better experience. However, of the areas that are OK, one of the best is Long Bay, which is right next door to the Verandah. Like all Antigua's beaches, it's public, so no problem with access.
There is some snorkelling on the reef out towards the entrance of Dian Bay (where Verandah is), but nothing just off the beach. Better snorkelling can be had on Long Bay, which is a few minutes walk from the entrance gates of Verandah. If you go out to the reef (you can walk a lot of the way it is so shallow) near the Beach restaurant on the opposite end to the Pineapple Beach resort, you will find some fish/coral, but certainly nothing extraordinary. As Mz G says, Antigua is not renowned for its reefs, there has been a lot of damage from hurricanes over the years, and if that is what you are wanting from a holiday you might look elsewhere in the Caribbean! Not that I want to put you off visiting Antigua, it has masses of other attractions!
Hi we snorkelled from the main beach and found lots of fish including a small barracuda. Best place is against the bottom of the cliffs or reefs. The water is crystal clear and as warm as a bath...... Sorry mizgeorge wasn't a fan of long beach.
We saw lots of squid and an octopus when snorkelling at Long Bay
