Special Thank You to the Destination Experts

Recently returned from our 3rd trip to Sri Lanka which was every bit as enjoyable as our first two trips. We used to have the philosophy that the world is a big place with many places to explore and never to go back to the same place twice, that was before we had experienced Sri Lanka. We have been to many countries but theres nowhere quite like Sri Lanka not only for the diversity of its flora, fauna, wildlife, food etc but for the warm welcome and smiles you get wherever you go on the island.

I would just like to thank all you DE's who helped us plan our recent trip with special thanks to Rod B for his patience when helping us with our itinerary and to Dave (Travellerguy) who recommended a fabulous guide and driver to us who turned out to be a real gem. There was no need to pay for extra guiding on our travels as, no matter where we went or what questions we threw at him, he was able to give us all the answers. His knowledge of his island is extensive, we were even invited to his house after our trip. He lives in the Kalutara area; if anyone would like his details just send me a private message. I can thoroughly recommend him.

Anyone considering going to Sri Lanka but a little unsure, as we were on our first visit, especially as the island has had its troubles in its recent past, just go for it - you will not be disappointed. Do not hesitate taking the advise of the DE's (they know what they are talking about)

Thanks again DE's and to our great guide and driver (I'm sure you will read this eventually) Hope to visit again soon.

Reading big thank you - we will travel to SL fit the first time in Dec 2011 with four kids age 11,8,5 and 8 months.

Woul you have please some comments on or plan :-) if it is ok :-)

Our plan is:

1. After arrival spend 2 nights in negombo, silver san hotel

2. Go to near Mirissa - nit sure if we should go by bus or rent a car with driver? How much i would be to rent a car?

3. We want to rent a house in Kamburugamuwa - to spend some time enjoying the ocean + we want to make one day trips to Galle, Matara, Siaraja forrest reserve + not sure if we could make it in one day to ella? Total we want to stay here about 7-9 days.

4. Than we want to travel to Dambullafor about 5 days and do obe day trips to ancint sights, elephsnt orphanage on the way there or on the way back o Colombo

5. Anything we missed whole planning what would be children-friendly ...?

Thank you fór any reccommendation or advice...

Hi Darina,

Okay will try.

2. Car-driver you must choose: one-way transfers are priced around Rs 70/km and that's Rs 11,000 for this stretch. Roundtrips are priced around Rs 40/km but with a daily minimum mileage, often around 100 km. Price could be slightly higher (Rs 5/km) for a minivan, not certain that your whole family could travel nicely in a normal sedan which is made for upto 3-4 adult passengers next to the driver.

You plan to do quite some travelling around on your days in Mirissa and Dambulla, and that too would be helped by a driver; a kid of 5 in the public buses (with e.g. all doors wide open during the speedy rides), not certain whether we dare to recommend that...

3. Indeed Ella is quite far for a day trip, 4-5 hours one way. Better plan on your transfer to Dambulla a break in Eliya Kandy and then for the first day of that transfer stop a bit in Ella.

For the rest it looks quite okay.

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]
