With First Choice, the price on the website used to go up and down daily. By watching it on a regular basis, it was possible to snatch a bargain on one day and then watch it go up by sometimes hundreds of pounds again. Worth holding on Pete ...

Hi Pete

try mercury direct their prices are comming down.

we have made the mistake of booking to return next year with kuoni as we thought we had got a good price for browns beach £2000 (from Newcastle)

after booking a friend booked the same deal through mercury for £500 less

tried to cancel but was told we would loose the full deposit not worth it.

still will be wiser next time

Regards

Hi,

Sri Lanka sets minimum hotel rates from November and i hope due to this reason hotel charges may go up.

Hi Nishantha,

As I understand this new minimum price setting, it applies only to the star rated hotels in Colombo.

Isn't this so ?

If it is, inspite of the government talking up a " tourist Boom", the fixed price rise would apply more to visiting business personel rather than tourists as not many tourists book their holidays to stay long in the capitol.

Do you see any signs that the minimum rates could be extended to include the inland and coastal package hotels ?. Those , along with the budget hotels and guest houses are the places where demand would increase due to a tourist boom , which may or may not happen.

Hi Rod,

Yes i also think the minimum rates applies to the star class hotels in Colombo. Anyway we will have to wait & see whether this will have an impact on the other hotel rates as well.

A few months back, I got a suite at the Hilton for a little under $60. While the low prices are needed to retain occupancy, I see that some of the hotels, specially the mid sized ones, keep raising their prices...expecting that that "big boom in tourism" that everyone thinks is coming soon after the war is over.

Hi !

Whatever the Govt. says, some Hotels have not yet finalised their rates for the forthcoming winer season. And even if there is a minimum rate, there are ways to get much better prices (cheaper prices) through some local travel agents.

There are a number of hotels in Colombo, classified as 5 star. But some of them really rate only a 3 star. And that is reflected in the fact that they can be taken, for example: US$ 70 for Double Roomm on B/B.

Cheers !
