Carara - can it be done on the way from SJ to MA?

I would like to consider adding Carara to my itinerary.

How far would it be from San Jose?

How far is it from MA?

I think the best thing for me to do it is on the way from San Jose to MA ?

Or maybe on the way from MA to Arenal?

How long should I expect to spend in the park?

Would I be able to see any of the Macau without a guide?

We did it on the way from Manuel Antonio to Arenal.

Here's how our schedule broke down:

Day 1:

We did a morning zipline in Manuel Antonio, and checked into our hotel near Carara by about 1:00. We ate lunch and then did the Crocodile Jungle Safari tour at 3:30 pm. We saw a TON of birds (everything from osprey to turquoise-browd motmots to macaws) as well as a few giant crocs on this. We also got a great Pacific sunset. We ate dinner and went to bed.

Day 2: We ate breakfast early, then went to Carara so we could get a tour right at 7:00 am with one of the guides outside. We saw plenty of macaws, as well as crocodiles, etc. We walked the lake trail. It was somewhat hard to spot birds because we couldn't locate them by sound, since the cicadas were deafening. After our tour, we went back to the hotel, checked out, and hit the road for Arenal.

Thanks for the great detailed response. We were not planning on spending the night just a quick stop over. If we did not go on a crocodile tour and just walk around the park maybe around 10:00/ 11:00 AM could we see anything ? With or without a guide?

Yes, you will see different wildlife if you stop on the way. But that area is very HOT, and I would not enjoy it mid day. The Macaws you are more likely to see flying at sunrise or sunset. They are beautiful.

Yeah, mid-day is the worst time. Hot, muggy, buggy. Better to do the 3:30 boat ride--lots of macaws, crocs, and other birds on that.

If you are just doing a quick stop, there is an easy trail but late morning you probably won't see much wiIdlife or birds and it will be $10 entrance. Maybe you should just stop at the Tarcoles bridge to view the crocodiles as you head for MA.. Just make sure your valuables are secure.

Thank you, the tip about the heat is important. I should have considered it myself.

I guess I will have to forget about this trip for now.

If you are going to be in the area, do the Pura Vida Gardens. Awesome!
