Arriving without booking accommodation - good idea?

I would be arriving to dugi otok without booking accommodation.

How difficult it is to find a private accommodation on the island?

Yes it is a good idea. I had booked Bozava House (obviously in Bozava). The rental office from Zadar had written to me "Great news, the owner accepted your booking. Balance: euros 742,00 paid". As a matter of fact Bozava House request the whole payment at the moment of reservation. When finally in Bozava, in the afternoon of July 10, I discovered that the owner of Bozava House does not collect a real trust from local people. In fact, in spite of the formal acceptance of my reservation, she had given somebody else her house. I could not do anything but go to the local turist office where they promptly told me "here we have a lot of apartments for rent". In thirty minutes or less I found a nice apartment and even got part of the cost difference back. Had I left without reservation, I would have found the same apartment and payed less. My experience at least.
