Alykanas - Young Children

We are looking to book a weeks holiday in Alykanas end May/beginning of June as a family with a 2yr old and 7month old. Undecided on whether to stay at Alykanas Village or Alykanas Beach? Also just need some reassurance that bars/restaurants have stuff for little ones as we plan on still going out and making the most of Greek food and hospitality. Thanks

I have not stayed at either of those hotels, but have been to Alykanas. It is safe beach, plenty of shallow calm water. You may have some choppy days that early on but it's generally a calm sheltered beach. As long as you are aware that Greek health and safety is non existent and you will have to keep a close eye on the kids as there are often huge crack in pavements, loose wires hanging and spikes and sharp objects hanging off fencing and buildings that aren't finished properly. As an adult this doesn't bother me, it's to be expected all over the Greek islands particularly now money is so tight for them. I'm sure the larger complexes you are aiming for are safer than the small independent places, but when you venture out you will need to be very aware for your toddler. There are some bars with play areas but again, keep an eye out for broken things as they are very relaxed and expect everyone to look after themselves. The Greeks are always friendly and welcoming and love children so they will catered for in every other way. The Mill bar on the beach road is great for kids, you can use their pool and loos/ showers all day for free and their food is good. The loungers are much more luxurious than at the hotels and the staff are friendly; it's owned by an English lady and some staff are English which helps if you need anything for the kids. I have often seen kids sound asleep in the shade on the huge comfy loungers, while their parents chill out close by in the pool; a nice relax after a few hours on the beach !

The Alykanas beach club and the Alykanas Village are next door to each other and are right on the very safe shallow beach there. The Alykanas Village (not to be confused with the Zante village hotel) has a small kiddies water park onsite that I'm sure your 2 year old will enjoy. Alykanas is just so laid back in it's attitude to using pools that it does'nt matter where you stay as pool are open to all. Either of the above will be fine for your family. Just to add a big thumbs up for Spiros & Julie's gorgeous mill bar !

Most places cater for young children, some restaurants/taverna's having stuff too play with. And the Greek people are very nice, and all about family!

The beaches are safe, shallow water that you can walk out into for some time before it starts to get deep.

Don't hesitate, you'll love it. :-)

We stayed at the Alykanas Beach in 2005 which is a while ago admittedly. Our daughters first holiday and we had a great time the we stayed in a two room apartment and they provided a cot. Things to consider is there isn't a lift so if your not on the ground flour it's steps for the push chair. The building is in a U shape with the bar in the middle this can cause a noise problem they had Karaoke nearly every night till midnight which kept our daughter awake with the dreadful noise.

Apart from that it was great, we ate out in lots of different tavernas and never had a bad meal. They all had facilities and catered for toddlers, high chairs and such.
