South Africa: GCT tour: August 17, 2011

Going to S Africa on GCT:

Looking for restaurants around Protea sWanderers Hotel in Johannesburg (Illovio);

Looking for unique places to shop for gold Jewelry either in Johannesburg or Capetown

Do we take the side trip to Pretoria? or go on own?

Where to have dinner in Knysna?

Thanks out there in cyberspace for this info.

Restaurants near the Wanderers: at least a hundred of various kinds within a 5 km radius! My favorite is Sophia's Bistro in Illovo Square - dining-out.co.za/member_details-MemberID-462…

As a longtime patron of the "parent" restaurant down the drag in Rosebank, I consider the writeup/advertorial to be spot on. Great food and service, superb value. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the Wanderers Protea.

Then there are a bunch of places in the Thrupps Centre nearby, www.thruppsillovocentre.co.za/index.html and in the other direction up Corlett Drive is Melrose Arch, www.melrosearch.co.za . A couple of dozen places there, across the spectrum. If the weather decides to warm up it could be quite pleasant at one of the piazza-side coffee shops. Also the blubird Centre, http://www.blubird.co.za/

PS:

I took a look (I'm at a loose end this evening...) at the Pretoria trip as described on the GCT website. At this time of year, when everything is so dry and dusty, I personally wouldn't bother with it. At the end of next month when the jacarandas are out it would be different. And unless you are a Herbert Baker buff, the history and culture on offer sound only mildly interesting in my view.
