1-day safari from Jo'burg - is it possible?

I'm going to Johannesburg on business, but will have 1 day-off. Is it possible to go for safari? Are there any group-tours?

Dee is quite correct, it takes 2 hours to drive to Pilanesberg Game Reserve, and unless you leave very early, it is already very hot when you arrive and animals are hiding in the shade. There is also another suggestion in that you visit the Rhino and Lion Park which is just 50 minutes from the airport or closer if you are staying in a hotel in Sandton. There you will see Lions - including the rare White Lions, Wild dogs, Buffalo, Hippos, Rhinos, many different antelope species including rare and not often seen such as Roan and SAble entelope, Vultures, warthogs, snakes, cheetah, and then the opportunity to touch a tiger/lion/whitelion/cheetah. They have also just introduced a baby giraffe. So for much less cost you can have a lovely mini safari including lunch on an open air deck overlooking the park.

It is 110% possible to get to Pilanesberg and have an enjoyable trip. If you leave at around 5am, you will arrive at 7, giving you a good 8 hours in the park. I have visited Pilanesberg many times, and have always had luck with the animals no matter what the time - The rangers & trackers there are very experienced and will find the animals for you (presuming you do a tour).

When in South Africa, you might as well experience the real thing :-)

Enjoy!
