Driving to Kruger from Johannesburg

If I'm flying out of Johannesburg at 11am on July 4th is it plausible to spend all day in Sabin Sands on the 3rd and leave driving early in the morning on the 4th and head to the airport in Johannesburg. Alternatively do we need to get a hotel in Johannesburg the night of the 3rd an cut short our Kruger safari. You can probably tell we want to spend as much time in Kruger as possible. Not sure how long a drive it is or how easy or "consistent"a trip it is.

I am not 100% sure but there are certain gate opening times, even for the Sabi Sands (but others know better). If so, the gate will most probably not be open the time you have to leave.

You need to calculate app. 6 hours drive, plus 1-2 hours depending on the natire of flight (international/domestic). That makes roughly 8 hours.

I would say no ways should you leave early morning.

When we estimate driving times, we sometimes forget about the time needed to reach a Sabi Sand gate from a lodge within the reserve. 20 to 30 minutes would be common for that trip. And from a gate to the airport is another 4.5 to 5 hours. So no, you cannot do what you described. Enjoy your safari - leave midday after the AM game drive and breakfast on the 3rd and stay the night at either the CityLodge ORTambo, or one of the hotels at the Emperor's Palace casino complex on the hotel grounds.

Yes it would definitely be cutting it too fine. We usually leave Sabi Sand after the morning game drive between nine and ten and that's to catch the 6pm flight, you need to allow time as Dave says just to leave the reserve, plus you do need stops along the way. It's a long drive.

Also second spending the night at City Lodge, its just so convenient. We are usually up and ready before the hotel restaurant opens but you will probably not be up so early. If you are however it's a short walk to the Mugg and Bean in the terminal (open 24 hours) for a scrumptious breakfast and coffee.
