More advice wanted!!!!

Hi could anyone please enlighten us as to how large Phuket island is ? We are travelling to Centara in July and understand the sea to be at its roughest, whilst we wouldn't swim would it be safe to paddle?

We have heard a whisper about a night time market, could anyone elaborate... time and place etc?

Can anyone recommend a trusted and reasonably priced driver for day trips.

Any recommendations where to eat local food NOT western tourist rubbish, not too far from the Centara Hotel? Altough if any recommendations for a fab eating place course we'd get a taxi!!

Are tuk tuks recommended and any idea of price range?

Would love to jet ski but worried about tourist scams, anyone advise?

Anywhere we could go to watch a perfect sunset?

Hear about 'dinopatk' or something is it worth taking the kids and how far away from our hotel?

Hi

Phuket is about the same size of Singapore which is 543 Sq km (209.7 sq miles) and is 50 km (31 mile) long and 20 km (12 miles) long.

It takes around 45mins to get from the Airport to your hotel in Kata.

July is when the prevailing wind (or monsoon wind) is coming from the southwest so that the sea at Kata is not the mill pond calm you see in December / January. You can swim but should only do so between the flags and becareful as rips claim many tourists each year. Paddling will be fine!

There is no night market at Kata. There is a night market every Friday / Saturday, and Sunday [I think] on the edge of Phuket Town - its about 15min taxi drive from Kata and is located near Central Festival Phuket Mall if you want a point of reference on the map.

There are lots of drivers receommended on this site, Daj or Manop, to name but two. If you search the word driver in the search field at the top of this page, you will find lots of reference and contact details.

You will find good eating everywhere, there are hundreds of eateries - as long as it freshly cooked and arrives piping hot you won't go far wrong. However, you will find that it is made for the tourist market and not 'real' thai tastes.

Tuk Tuks and Taxis are very fixed price and 400thb is the standard ride, if you can get it cheaper as a tourist then good for you.

If you look in the Phuket forum (one up from the Kata forum) you will find lots of really good advice about hiring a jet ski. Try to avoid, and you will be ripped off unless very, very careful!

Kata beach offers the perfect sunset every night!! Some of my 'best ever' sunset pictures are on Kata Beach.

From your hotel the Dino Park is about a 5-10min walk from your hotel - you might find this link useful - not our sort of thing but we are not catering for children. http://www.dinopark.com/location.html

Have fun!!

Hi EELS2020

The weekend market in Phuket on both Saturday and Sunday night starts around 4pm - 10pm is well worth a visit and full of great bargains and the most amazing Thai food anywhere in Phuket.

Book a trip to Phi PHI with Phuket Sail Tours you can snorkel and the sea life is amazing we had a few people on our trip that had never snorkeled before and they showed them and they absolutely loved it. Best money we spent.

If you get tiired of Thai food and want the best burger in town go to Daves at the Sports Bar near JJ in Patong delicious food.

Do not get a Jet Ski no matter what. Firstly they are not insured and so your insurance company will not pay if you are injured and they are all scam artists and best avoided at all costs it will ruin your holiday. Even with all the warnings we saw peope being harassed by the Jet Ski Mafia trying to tell them they had damaged the jet ski and needed to pay and they were very agressive stay away is my advice.

The sea was so warm and the Thai peope were so lovely it was paradise we only go back today and I am already missing it.

Hope you have a wonderful time

There are not too many jet skis for rent in July anyway, the sea is a bit rough. If you want to go for a paddle a nice place is in the mangrove forest at Bang Rong pier. The pier is on the northeast side of the island, passed the gibbon rehab project. There are lots of monkeys there too.

Any recommendations where to eat local food NOT western tourist rubbish, not too far from the Centara Hotel? Altough if any recommendations for a fab eating place course we'd get a taxi!!

------- have not eaten there myself but Red Onion comes highly recommended. Heres what fanofkaron had to say:

"...Not only are the prices very reasonable but the food is delicious. Most of the 'restaurant' meals we eat (when in Phuket) are at the Red Onion - there's another little Thai restaurant (don't think it had a name) it's about five doors down (towards the beach) from the Red Onion - food is well priced and good quality. Also Ging is a great restaurant in Karon, the service is terrific; the staff are very friendly; the cocktails are delicious and the toilet is the best I've seen in Phuket...."

If you want to eat at a locals haunt, Kaab Gluay fits the bill, but it's way north in Patong.

Are tuk tuks recommended and any idea of price range?

--------- Yes, a great way to get around. We found Karon the worst for trying to get a good price. That 400 baht would (should) be from Karon to Patong. No reason why you couldn't get 600 baht return; the driver will organise a pick up time or leave a phone number. Patong has introduced a 200 baht max. for anywhere in Patong, don't know if the same applies in Karon. Best we could get for short trips in Patong was 150 baht. And yet an all day driving tour in a comfortable van is easily had for 1000 baht.

Would love to jet ski but worried about tourist scams, anyone advise?

---- do you really think it's going to be that much fun ? I watch the people on them who have never ridden before, and after about 10 minutes they've had enough. Plus being scammed is always a possibility.

Anywhere we could go to watch a perfect sunset?

---- Cape Promthep. Or if it's Centara Grande or Villas (and not Centara Karon) you are staying at, your hotel should be good. If eating as well, maybe Baan Rim Pa in Patong, or Mom Tri's in Kata (but both $$$). Maybe even reggae bar on Kata beach, but being at the south end mightn't be the best for sunsets.

Hear about 'dinopatk' or something is it worth taking the kids and how far away from our hotel?

---- It's Dino Park; Dinosaur themed mini golf. Don't eat there, it's just average and over priced. Our kids enjoyed the mini golf. Some say it's better by night, but we went at night and apart from the erupting Volcano, from memory it was a little hard to see the decorations. Still good though.
