Moped Hire

Hi all, we have booked our 1st visit to Thailand staying at Katathani for May 2013 and have noted that lots of people mention the high cost of taxi/tuk-tuk's to get around.

We are possibly going to hire a moped 7/10 days to get around by day but wondered what are the road conditions like? Are mopeds a "safe" option (i do have experience of riding motorcycles) if ridden correctly, also what would we expect to pay for a duration of 7/10 days.

Many thanks in advance.

Motorcycles (most of which are mopeds/scooters under 150 cc) are the single most dangerous form of transport in Thailand. More than 30 people a day are killed in motorcycle related accidents, and hundreds injured. The Phuket Gazette regularly has stories of foreigners killed and injured in M/C accidents on the island. Many posters will say that they've hired motorcycles with incident and that is true of course.

If you do decide to hire, this is how to do it legally:

Hire 150 to 200Bt a day. The roads are OK, but avoid drain covers and a few pot holes. The island is a great place to cruise around. Patong and Phuket Town the traffic can get very busy.

As you are experienced, and I guess licensed you will should be fine.

Check that your travel insurance will cover you for riding motorcycles - some don't

Don't forget to wear a helmet not only for safety but the police have been out the last few nights fining people.

We saw 3 motorbike accidents from the airport to Patong so be extra careful.
