Good family hotel in Karon/Phuket

Hi,

My family is going to Phuket in December/January 2012 and I need advice on some nice hotel options. We need either connecting rooms or a 2 bedroom (is there such thing as a 3 bedroom) suite. We would like amenities that will keep the kids (12,12 and 14) entertained as well as having a wow factor without over the top prices. I would prefer a hotel on the beach and want it 4+ stars. Does anyone have any suggestions? Happy to be advised that there are better locations to stay but we would like to avoid staying in areas where we feel compelled to have a curfew to avoid the seedy elements.

Thanks!

Frances

We stayed at the Moevenpick Karon Beach in December 2010 and are going back in December this year. We will have 3 kids - 11, 15 & 15. We are staying in the 2 bedroom suite near the villas - expensive though this time of year although booking 2 rooms is also costly. The main tower there I believe has pretty standard hotel rooms and in need of upgrade.

Karon Beach is great because you avoid that seedy element you get at Patong. I would not feel safe there of a night( or even day) with teenage girls and have read similar posts on TA. It is only 15min in a tuk tuk to Patong for shopping, although Karon has its own markets( we went into Patong for 1 day).

The grounds are gorgeous at resort and pool area lovely with cushioned sunbeds. No free internet in rooms but there is cafe that offers free internet on resort - can be busy.

Extremely central which is a must for us - walk to shopping, dinner and pampering. Was looking at Centura Grande but is up on hill and not walking distance to anywhere.

Breakfasts good, although can be busy, and we would not hav elunch and then go for dinner. There is a 7/11 at front of resort where we bought few things to keep in room for arvo snacks if got hungry, and of course pool bar for iceblocks/drinks.

We are going back for 2nd stay so must be good.

We stayed at Horizon Karon Beach Resort & Spa last year & are returning there again this June. It has beautiful gardens & mountain views. Very reasonably priced and can get interconnecting rooms with 2Q beds in the rooms. 2 Pools (one upper & one lower). Huge breakfast variety. Very close walking distance to restaruants & shopping at Kata.

Karon, Kata or Patong, they will all have working girls out at night. Apart from Bangla, Patong didn't seem seedy at all, and even in Bangla it was mostly behind closed doors unless you were there late. I found it harder to avoid working girls in Kata. Admittedly, we go low season, so I don't know how different it is in Dec/Jan. But we found the seediness factor to be exaggerated. Depends on your own personal standards, I guess. I see dresses as short (shorter !) and as revealing on the girls as they leave the nightclubs in my own city, even in the middle of winter !

We went with our kids when they were 15 & 13, and felt Patong to be perfectly safe for them to be out during the day on their own, and with us at night. IMO Patong is actually safer than Karon or Kata as there are so many people about.

As for somewhere to stay, all the prices in Phuket are OTT in Dec/Jan. You really need to give some idea of budget if you want helpful suggestions.

Thanks everyone for the tips. It is super expensive wherever we seem to enquire so will keep looking - or maybe even change our dates to avoid the Christmas high season :)

Dewa resorts have a great place on Karon beach, but also on Nai Yang beach. I prefer the later, but both are wonderful and ideal for a family.

I too would recommend Dewa at Nai Yang. May be away from everything but no biggie to get to Tours, Patong(shopping) or Phuket Town (Boat trip to Islands). They have enough at Resort for entertaining kids: Bikes, Table Tennis, water activities, gorgeous pool. Food is cheaper in Nai Yang than the actual Resort & is only a short walk. The Thai's are soooo friendly there. Get a massage or pamper yourself at "Relax" they are wonderful Ladies there & never pressure you when passing their shop:Unlike many others

Hi Frances

We are arriving in Karon just after New Year 2013 and like most people found "cheap" high quality accommodation at that time of year extremely hard to find. That's standard anywhere at that time of the year though, so despite a "wallett shock" we were prepared to pay it.

We did finally decide on the Andaman Seaview Hotel which suits our requirements at AUD $160.00 per night. This is quite close to the beach in Karon - almost but not quite absolute beach front. To be honest, I don't think there is a lot of absolute beachfront in Karon - although other local specialists may prove me wrong.

While that is not outrageous by western International standards it is a bit on the high side for Thailand and I should say, expected and fair enough. Nevertheless, that's the price at that time of the year and if you want to go then, unfortunately that's what you have to pay.

I should also mention that we booked back in March and availability was getting tight, so I would suggest you try and lock something in asap or fear missing out.

Good luck with it all - I know it can become a bit stressful at times!

Cheers

Steve

Hi Frances,

We recently Stayed at the Centara Karon resort and as a family hotel it was fantastic. Had connecting rooms in the Tropicale wing, ground floor directly opposite the pool. It's close to lots of restaurants, around the corner from the Karon Temple Market and close to the beach. Couldn't fault either the hotel or the location.

Having said all of that though, my preference for location is Patong, simply because it's so much busier and livlier. In Patong we always choose the Patong Merlin, however going back in November and are going to give the Burasari a try.
