Untersberg Ice Caves/Area or Berchtesgaden Salt Mines/Area

Driving from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden for one day. Which area is best to see Untersberg Ice Caves/Area or Berchtesgaden Salt Mines/Eagles Nest. Can we to to the Ice Caves and then the Lake Konigssee area?

If we go directly to Berchtesgaden I would like to see the Salt Mines/Hike Mt Jenner/Eagles Nest. Is this possible if starting very early in morning in May and what order would we do these.

The Untersberg ice caves are a two hour hike from the cable car. I've not visited them, but the ice caves above Werfen to the south of Salzburg are excellent and long fondly remembered, and the walk to them isn't very long. Werfen also has an excellent medieval castle. A visit to the salt mines from either the Austrian or German side is fine, but nothing compared to the ice caves.

This is too many items for one day. Your choices in May may be narrowed down depending on the weather.

First of all, the Eagles Nest opens "sometime" in May and is weather dependent. The Untersberg is great but that would eat up much of your day.

You can always do the Salt Mines later in the day since it is inside. If the day is good, you can drive to the area, about 35 minutes from Salzburg...take the Jenner lift and do a little hiking at the top, maybe to the midway point which would be about 2 hours depending on your ability. From the peak, there are pretty good views of the Eagle's Nest. Then you could take the lift back to the bottom from the middle station and take the boat on the Konigssee which is located just at the opposite side of the parking area for the Jennerbahn. From there you could do the Salt Mines.check their website for the last tour of the day.

if the day is bad weather, you could do the Salt Mines, Documentation center, and spend some time just walking around the town of B'gaden which is quite pretty.

You need to pick out which things are most important to you and be able to be flexible since the weather plays a big role for many of these activities.

I was looking through the websites. Is there a specific boat that takes you from Mt Jenner parking lot area to the Salt Mines? Would we then get a return back to our car?

The Jenner parking area and the huge Konigssee parking area and adjacent to each other and you can easily walk from the Jennerbahn (chair lift entry point) to the Konigssee boat entry/ticket area.

The boats on the Konigssee stop at St Bartholomew and several other hiking points.

The salt mine is about a ten minute drive from this area.
