2-3 day Trip to the Blue Mountains from Sydney

4 of us are traviling to Australia to eventually hook up with a tour in Cairns. Before that time we are 5 days in Sydney and are hoping to keep busy with some active things to do....we were going to take a tour of the Hunter Valley and then were looking to hike in the blue mountains staying overnight for at least one night there.....but the problem is...we won't be renting a car and would like to find an accomodation where we can hike right from....also can we get transport from sydney to the Blue Mts. which is not to difficult...? Any other suggestions on what we could do in Sydney would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

I'm just wondering what sort of accommodation you're after in the Blue Mts. B&B?? Hotel?? Hostel??

You have many options for hiking and bushwalking in and around the Blue Mountains and you won't need a car if you say stay around Katoomba or Leura and do walks near those areas.

Transport from Sydney to Katoomba / Leura - go by train - around 2 hours - catch the train from Central. Try to get an early morning train to make the most of your time there.

Here are a couple of websites about the Blue Mountains which may be useful to you.

There's also a current thread about bushwalking / hiking in the Blue Mountains which you may like to read too.

And finally, for other ideas about waht to do in Sydney, have a look at the FAQs on the right hand side of your screen as well as the Trip Reports (same location) as they are full of information which may assist you in planning your holiday to suit your needs.

Happy planning !

Dougo's advice is so comprehensive that there seems little for me to add; if you want to step outside your hotel room and hike without delay, stay as close to Echo Point (Katoomba) as you can get.... there are several bush walks starting from there, all signposted. Nearby Lurline St has a host of houses converted into bed-and-breakfasts, and some of them are very charming indeed, although prices are generally quite high. If you want a simple motel room, there are two motels, right next door to each other and as alike as peas in a pod, just a few metres from Echo Point. They are called the Three Sisters Motel and the Three Explorers Motel. They're nothing fancy, just ordinary, serviceable motel rooms, but the location is rather great. If you want to explore the area by hop-on-hop-off London bus (or trolley), they are very close to the Echo Point bus stop, too.

As for other activities in Sydney, I recall that a few years ago I assembled a report giving a dozen activities suitable for Sydney in autumn over a period of a few days; I expect you're coming in Spring, but, really, it's just as nice a season here, and everything I wrote is equally-applicable, so I suggest you browse through this thread:

There's a bit about the Blue Mountains somewhere in there, also.

Have a great holiday!
