Which day to visit Arches?

We arrive in Moab on April 5th, a Saturday, hopefully in time to make it to Delicate Arch or Windows for sunset. We are driving from Salt Lake City airport. Then we have three nights in Moab, but really just one more full day to see the rest of Arches, and one day to go to Canyonlands (Islands section), would like to go to Mesa Arch for sunrise, then hike other trails and also go to Dead Horse Point. Would we be better off to go to Canyonlands on our first day (Sunday) and save Arches for Monday? Assuming there would be fewer people, but it will also be more difficult for us to be up for sunrise on Sunday in Canyonlands after a full day of travel the previous day. Will it make any difference early April? Thanks.

Crowdwise it won't make any difference at all. The parks are pretty huge. The greatest concentration of people you'll see will be Saturday night at Delicate Arch. That will be busy. You'll also usually find a large number of sunrise photographers at Mesa Arch. From Moab you'll need 45-50 minutes to drive to the trailhead and another 10 minutes to talk to the arch. Sunrise will be around 6:56 am that time of year.

Based on my personal experience, there's generally 10-20 photographers there. If you're a serious photographer and want the primo spot, you'll need to be there more than an hour before sunrise. If you just want to get a representative shot, don't worry so much about it.

Have fun.

Weekdays are alway thinner than weekends, but this time of year won't be a zoo like summer. Great advice from T&C.

By the way, I meant to say 10 minute WALK to the arch, not talk. You can talk to the arch as long as you like.

Thanks for the info, I would like a good spot for Mesa arch but I'm not motivated enough to leave at 5am! We will be doing good to get there at 7, so what will be will be! Good to know that Monday won't be any different, we may want to go by the weather forecast also.

We are coming to spend 1 day at Arches in Mid- june 2014, after seeing Yellowstone.

Is it all hiking? We will have grandma with us. Thanks!

Not sure how your body adjusts when you are traveling. If it takes longer then maybe you could get up earlier to do sunrise at Mesa in Canyonlands. With others they may feel just drained with the driving......so they will be slow to start the first full day.

Of course---another factor will be weather.

Hello hasOpinions. Welcome to the forum.

It is best to start a new thread when you have a question rather than add to an existing thread. Just click on the "ask a question" button in the Utah forum.

That said, it is not ALL hiking, as you can see some of the sights in Arches from the overlooks and along the road or with just short walks. You can stop at either end of Park Avenue and take in the views, enjoy Balanced Rock, look around the Windows Section. and maybe get out to Landscape Arch (a flat walk that is not too long, well maybe 2 miles round trip, but it is sandy). There is also a nice view point at the Fiery Furnace trailhead.
