Side Trap

Is a side trip off of US50 and 550 to see Black Canyon worth it?

We will be going from Moab to Cortez via Grand Junction and the Million Dollar Highway. Was thinking of possibly staying a night in Montrose if it is worth the side trip to the Black Canyon. And then going on to Cortez and Mesa Verde the next day.

I guess it depends on how much time you have for your trip. In a few hours you can see views of the canyon. Visit nps.gov and see what activities you are interested in.

You are aware that you are taking a long way to get from Moab to Cortez.? The route you are taking is close to 300 miles and 6 hours from Moab to Durango. Nice sightseeing just not the most direct route.

You can easily drive from Moab to Durango in 3 hours (158 miles), going through Cortez via 191/491/160.

Yes, I am aware of the distance involved. Actually we are taking that route "on purpose" so to speak just because of all the information we have heard about the Million Dollar Highway. Thus the staying an extra night in Montros to split the trip in half.

Ok. Sounds like a fun trip. Will you be visiting Colorado National Monument in Grand Junction too?

Have fun.
