Bryce to Torrey - Things to see and do

Hi, planning this leg of our road trip and whated some insider info on a place to stop for lunch and things to do on route to our stop Torrey.

As its just over 120miles it gives us most of the day do a few things on route.

I have seen the Kava coffee place - looks good

and Im interested in the calf creek walk to see the waterfall but how cold will it be in October - we are not experienced hikers so have no idea how long a 6 mile round trip would take or what the terrain is like.

The Calf Creek hike is relatively level but sandy and possibly muddy. You do follow a creek bed for part of the trail. October weather will probably be nice. The creek will not be running heavily though in the fall and so the falls will be less dramatic. There are also petroglyphs and rock paintings. The point is to take your time. UT 12 is one of the most scenic highways in the world.

You can take the Burr Trail from Boulder several miles to where the pavement ends near the back entrance to Capitol Reef NP.Its a nice drive.

Hells Backbone Grill in Boulder is a good place to eat.Along route 12 over the mountain there are several overlooks to pull over and see.

Close to Escalante is the state park that has petrified rocks, and there is Anasazi state park near Boulder.

Hole in the Rock Road is along the way, with a couple slot canyons accessed from it,but it is a dirt road.

In the town of Escalante is a major visitor center. Stop in there for any more questions and ideas. What you've been given so far is pretty good.

Plan to stop all along the way for picture taking.

The Cannonville visitors Center is nice. You could take a side trip to Kodachrome basin, though a quick trip there doesn't usually impress.

Stop for a look at least at Powell Point.

Then as mentioned there is the Escalante SP and short hike.

Then the Escalante Visitors Center. Ask about hiking the river to Escalante arch.

If you feel comfortable taking the dirt Hole in the Rock road then go the 10 miles to Devil's Garden.

Lunch at Kiva Koffee

Calf Creek falls

The Hogbacks definitely call for stopping

The Burr trail at least to 15 miles in which will take you through Long Canyon. You should go through the canyon (there are a couple places to stop) and then down into the valley before turning around for a look at the circle Cliffs.

Anasazi SP has a kiva and small pueblo.

I will be making a trip from Bryce to Moab. Is Escalante Grand Staircase much of a detour? I got 2 days to get to Moab. What would be a suitable place to stay overnight?

Tks.

Escalante-Grand Staircase is accessed from hwy 12. You can stop in Escalante at the visitors center there. You can also take the hike at Calf Creek Falls. Both without a detour.

Best place to stay between Bryce and Moab would be Torrey.
