Central place to stay that we can do all the canyons,

we are planning a trip this summer and want to see all the canyons but I see the distance in driving from one to the other is quite far. I would like to find a location that we could stay at and then take day trips to all the canyons and attractions.

1. Re: Central place to stay that we can do all the canyons,

Which canyons in particular are you referring to?

I'll assume you mean Bryce canyon for sure since you've posted there. Do you want to include Zion and North Rim of the Grand Canyon?

The central point to visit those three would be Kanab. It is a nice small town with some adequate lodging and good food.

However as you already stated the parks are far apart. You will burn valuable time driving from one park to and back and will not get the most of your park experience. Much better would be to stay near each park.

For Zions that would be Springdale which is right at the entrance to the park

For Bryce if you don't stay in the park at the lodge then right outside the entrance are the Ruby's Inn, Best Western Bryce Grand and several other options.

For North Rim the best place is at the lodge in the park.

While staying near the parks involves moving every couple of days your experience in the parks will be much enhanced by being able to enjoy the sunrise, sunset and less busy times after the day trippers leave.

Good info from Kbecjeans. You will have a much better experience if you base at the respective park you are visiting then move on to the next. The distances will add up and it will such valuable time out of your vacation. Rule of thumb is minimum one night at Bryce, minimum two to three nights Zion. Let us know where else you want to visit.

Have fun.

Staying at a central location wastes much more time than moving from one park to the next. Given that the parks are roughly 3 hours away from each other, that means about 1 1/2 hours commute in the morning and again in the afternoon. The worst part is that you'll miss the best times of day at the parks, that being sunset and sunrise.

Strongly urge you to abandon the single location plan.

As mentioned, the 'canyons' is a much different kettle of fish than the southern Utah national parks. There is a lot of good info on the main utah forum page in the upper right corner 'top questions' There are a lot of good conversations started recently on the Utah forum that provide good info if your interested in reading.

If you are looking to explore some of the canyons in the GSE, namely the Escalante canyons, then escalante is a good place to base yourself, which provides quick access to Hole in the Rock road and Posey Lake/Hells Backbone road.

I thank all of you for your informative answers which all seem to agree that staying in one place would waste valuable time at the sites. I think we will take your advice. Again, thanks
