The camp ground is often full all summer long, you need to get there early in the day to have a reasonable chance of finding a place. If it is full you can head up to Torrey where there are a couple of small RV parks, Thousand Lakes RV has some nice tenting spots . There is a primitive National Forest camp site between Torrey and Bicknell.

Thanks for your reply Bob. We will try Fruita for our tent camping and head to one of the others you suggested if Fruita is full.

A much delayed update. WE had no trouble at all finding a camping spot in Fruita in July. We were told there were loads of spots available because a hard freeze had delayed or ruined the fruit that normally would ahve ripened in July. A lovely campground.

We were just at Fruita Sunday and Monday, May 3 & 4th, 2009. We were told that they had been filling up every day. We got there at 5pm on Sunday and were lucky there were sites still available. They filled up around 6pm that night...on Monday, they filled up at 3pm.

We were told by the campground host that the tent sites are the last to go usually.

I know this isn't a new post--just wanted to reply for future travelers who do the search!
