Capitol Reef worth a detour?

Capitol Reef worth a detour?

We are 2 non-hiking 65+ year old women flying to Salt Lake City in September. We plan to drive down to Bryce and Zion when we arrive and hit the Moab area on the flip side. We could easily include Capitol Reef if it is worth the detour. Any comments or other suggestions?

To avoid any backtracking go to Zion first, then you could see Bryce next. Then drive scenic Hwy 12 to Torrey to stay for Capitol Reef, then on to Moab.

Yes Capitol Reef is worth seeing. And going this route would not be a detour, its on the way.You can drive thru Capitol Gorge in the park and do the short walk to Pioneer Registry. There are also some nice orchards there where you can pick fruit if its in season.Capitol Reef is a great park that really gets overlooked.

Great advice from dez40, as usual. I agree with the plan he has suggested, as it reduces the backtracking.

Capitol Reef is a very nice park and absolutely worth the stop, for all the reasons listed above.

Another very interesting little place to stop on the way from Torrey/Capitol Reef to Moab is Goblin Valley State Park, just off of Route 24 north of Hanksville. Hundreds of "small" roack formations that look like, well, goblins!

And if you enjoy REALLY good, local, insteresting food...Cafe Diablo, in the town of Torrey (next to Capitol Reef) is worth the stop all on its own! Just check their serving hours to be sure you're there when you can stop and have a really memorable meal...Good luck!
