Thanksgiving long weekend Oregon (Crater Lake)

Hi everyone,

I was really curious to have some advices/tips for a 4-5 days trip to Oregon in this thanksgiving long weekend. Like what to do/ what not to do/where to go/what to carry stuffs from your experiences?

We are planning to go and see crater lake for sure. Is thanksgiving time is the right time to go and see crater lake? We will actually be able to see the lake around this time? And what are the other things we can do as well in oregon around crater lake? Any activities?

Can anybody help me in filling below details?

Attractions to cover:

Perfect place/hotel/motel to stay:

Things to do (adventure if any):

Important tips/guidance?

Thanks in advance and Happy Thanksgiving

Well, the 10-day forecast doesn't call for anything drastic, but the low temps will be in the 20s, so you can be pretty sure that things will get pretty icy at night. Keep an eye on www.tripcheck.com and the Crater Lake National Park website for more current road and weather conditions. Oregon weather changes often and Thanksgiving is still too far off for any confident predictions.

We've had several similar questions posted in the past few days. And the caution is always the same: Be prepared for winter weather...snow, ice, poor visibility. You could get lucky, but the chances aren't in your favor. From Redding north through the Shasta Lakes area, over the Siskiyous and to Crater Lake via the southern entrance be prepared for winter driving. Carry chains and pack extra winter clothing, food and water in your car. If you're not comfortable driving in winter conditions, change your plans to a summer trip. Seriously.

As for places to stay...I'd plan on just driving to the lake, taking a look and heading back to I-5 and staying in Medford or Ashland. Winter lodging around the lake is extremely limited and only the southern entrance is open. The rim road is also snowed under by now.

opoppas advice is very sound. If weather is of concern, you may want to consider redwoods national park. Redwoods here are much more impressive than anything near SF. I went to Big Basin, near SJ and trees there are pretty mid size compared to the ones up north... plenty to do there for 3-4 days.

Ashland a fun place to hang out- Lithia Park is nice- don't think any plays are happening at the moment.

If it does not snow too much more between now and then, you can probably see the lake without trouble.

Here is a website with webcam photos. Scroll down from the top banner for the real time photos:

There are a series of storms coming in this week so keep checking the webcams during daylight hours to see how much snow CL getting!

If you go there, the days are short and the roads may be icy in early morning and late afternoon.

There are many places to stay in Ashland. Enter the town name in the search box at the top right and then click on "hotels", and click on all tabs under that heading to find motels or B&Bs etc.
