Best Way to Scotty's Castle from Beatty, NV???

My map program shows two ways:

1. Beatty > Hwy 374 into DV and North Road to Scotty's

2. Beatty > Hwy 95 North > Hwy 267 (Hwy 72) to North Hwy to Scotty's

Other than Rhyolite, are there any sites to see along either route. (I am an amateur photographer.)

Thanks, Kent

If you are coming from the south, the most direct way is through Beatty to Hwy 374, which lets you see Rhyolite, Titus Canyon as an option, and Hell's Gate vista point unless you take Titus Canyon. This is the more freqently traveled way in from Nevada.

If you're coming from north of Beatty (Tonopah, Reno), it's more direct to take Hwy 267 and not go to Beatty at all. You'll miss Rhyolite, Titus, and Hell's Gate. Traffic is much lighter on this route. Along Hwy 267 on your right as you head from 95 toward the park, 5-6 miles from the 95 junction is the ghost town of Bonnie Claire. It was once the site of a smelter for nearby mines, and quite a fewruins are still there. Bonnie Claire was a stop on the old Las Vegas & Tonopah Railroad. During Castle construction, materials and supplies went to Bonnie Claire and Albert Johnson's workers would pick them up in wagons or trucks for the last 20 miles.

When the LV&T was abandoned, Johnson had his men go collect the ties, which he intended for use as building materials or firewood. Since railroad ties were treated with creosote, they would burn readily but be kinda noxious for indoors, and the bulk of the ties were never used. They now reside in a cranny just south if the Castle proper, called Tie Canyon. You can go there on your walking tour of the Castle grounds and see other abandoned odds and ends from the construction period.

If you have a 4wd SUV don't miss Titus Canyon. It's a spectacular drive on a dirtroad but ask for conditions first. The app. 25 miles Titus Canyon rd at least will take 2 hours.
