Mt. McKinley Princess Lodge or Denali Princess Lodge

Which is best to stay at for being central to do things in and or near Denali National Park? How far apart are Denali State Park and Denali National Park?

Is there a reason you are stuck on just one of those two? I assume you are on a cruise and those are the options they gave you? Do you have to stay in their lodging? Plenty of other places that are nice in Healy (about ten miles from Denali National Park) and a lot cheaper.

There's about 100 miles distance between the visitor's center in Denali State Park and the visitor's center in Denali National Park. You don't want to try to shuttle back and forth between the two.

McKinley Princess is in Trapper Creek (technically about 15 miles north of Trapper Creek), near Denali State Park. Denali Princess is in Glitter Gulch near the entrance to Denali National Park. Just depends on what you want to do as to which is better for you.

Here's a good map that they give out and DNP that will help:

I really think you want to stay near Denali NP. McKinley Princess Lodge is 2 hours from there. There is a reason the national park is a national park :-)

I agree with alaskantiger. So many lodging options near the entrance to Denali that I would not recommend staying at the Denali Princess or anywhere in "Glitter Gulch" unless you don't have a car (which would be a shame in itself!).

We have stayed at both Princess lodges. The one at Denali is right on the Parks Hwy and not really appealing. Several years ago we were at Mt McKinley Chalets, and that was much better. If you have a car and want to get away from the cruise ship types, don't stay there. Note, that I am not knocking cruise ship types, as most posters here know that we are.

Mt McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge is more or less "wilderness" as it is out in nowhere north of Trapper Creek (Mile 133). The views of the mountain there are fantastic. That is, when it is out. If you have a car you can drive into Talkeetna, but it is not a short drive. Interesting, is if you check the map Trapper Creek is nearly across the river from Talkeetna. But, no bridge.

Having just returned from Alaska and Denali National Park. If at all possible stay in Healy at a B&B avoid glitter gulch. You will need a car to get to the park entrance for the shuttles but it is really easy to do. Princess Denali Lodge will bump you even if fully booked and paid for to make room for cruise tour guests, this happened to us, they shove you into the McKinley Chalet and you really don't want to stay there.
