doesn't the train arrive around noon and leave at 4? So you'll barely have 4 hrs.
Look at the park web site and see what you have time for .... there are some hikes around the entrance area, movies, exhibits, the free bus to Savage River trailhead if you want to hike along the river or just enjoy the fall colors (and probably moose). There's also a free shuttle to the sled dog demo at 2pm.
Check out the park newspaper
We had a fantastic holiday in Alaska using the railroad from Seward up to Fairbanks and I would highly recommend it as a way to travel... however, the train leaves Fairbanks at 8.15am arrives at Denali at 12.10pm and then leaves again at 4.00pm so you would have very little time in Denali-especially as they like you to check in 45 minutes or so before departure.
With so much to do in Fairbanks, why not spend the day there instead of nearly 8 hours on the train for only a couple of hours in Denali which really warrants a lot more time if you want to go into the National Park.
This one gets me. Denali requires more than a day visit. Why bother unless your only interest is riding the train. Not to knock Fairbanks, but what is it that you want to go there and not to go back to Denali
Thanks to everyone who posted. We had a wonderful time in the train and in Denali. The scenery around Healy in Fall was great. We had about three hours in Denali, we walked around in a short trail took pictures of Fall color and went to the Dog demo by rangers.
Please note we had already visited Denali in Summer, for the first timers in Denali I would strongly recommend to take shuttle/bus service inside the park for enjoying the wildlife sightings.
For just a day-break, train is a very good option!
Fine if your only interest was riding on the train. No knocking here as we like trains too. Better option would have been the Hurricane Tour out of Talkeetna, but impractical for you if in FairbanksEdited: 17 September 2013, 17:22
Glad you enjoyed yourselves! :)
