Alaska Travel Advice

We are arriving via cruise ship in Seward mid July and have about a week after for our own excursions. I plan on renting a vehicle and driving from Seward to… knowing I would like to spend time in Anchorage and Denali what else is drivable to see within that timeframe and would be a good destination for flights back to NY? Previous experience self guided hiking in Iceland and Kauai.

Check and see what the one way car rental (Hertz) rates are from Seward to Anchorage. If they are too expensive you may want to plan to take the train to Anchorage and renting from there. You probably want to plan on flying out of Anchorage.

Another thought would be to check OW rental to Fairbanks and fly from there but the cost may be prohibitive.

With one week (6 nights?) You should plan at least 1 night in Seward, 1 night in transit to Denali and at least 2 nights in Denali area and 1 night in Anchorage before you leave.

What do you want to do, what are your interests? Budget? What type of lodging are you interested in?

Hello Keith and welcome to the Trip Advisor forum for Alaska!

A couple of questions: Who is "we"? What are your interests? What level of physical activity are you able to do? Did you have a budget in mind?

I feel renting a car for exploring Alaska is a very good way to go. A week should give you enough time to do quite a bit of exploring.
