Winging it for Denali is not a good idea.

Unless you like sleeping in your car or not caring what you pay. Usually, the nice & affordable places book very early, so your choices will either be dives (that aren't cheap either) or rooms that are $200-300. I wouldn't wing anywhere in Alaska during the summer. :)

if you want to wing it, rent an RV. RV's are self contained so you don't even need a campground every nite.

But even in Denali you can't wing it with an RV.

The first time I went to Denali I didn't have a reservation for a campground or a shuttle; as a result we had to camp at a private campground nearby (a gravel lot) and had to wait 2 days for availability on the bus.

I would definitely not "wing it" in Alaska, especially in the summer. Book now, otherwise you might be on a park bench or an expensive dump. There are a lot of great places to stay, particularly nice B&B's. They are usually quite reasonable. If you are going to stay in Denali, you must book now. It's expensive to stay in the park, but it's worth it. Otherwise you will ride a bus all day in and out of Denali. Staying there is really worth the experience. We are doing a guided Alaska trip in July with Off the Beaten Path, a Montana outfit.

For many, the joy of Denali is the shuttle bus rides from which to spot wildlife & from which to take hikes.

Yes Helrn, book your lodging ahead of time. With only a week, your travels Anchorage-Seward-Denali are self-limiting as it is. We recommend that you plan an overnight between Seward & Denali.

Something like this:

Day 1 Anchorage

Day 2 Denali

Day 3 Denali

Day 4 Girdwood, Anchorage or Palmer

Day 5 Seward

Day 6 Seward

Day 7 Anchorage
