Everglades

I would like to know, what is the best way to go to everglades national park from Miami for a 1-day-trip (bus or an agency ...)? There will be 4 persons going and we would like to go on an airboat tour. Or do you prefer something else rather than an airboat tour? We would like to see some animals and some of the real everglades national park.

Check a map. There is really only one main way in and you have to come back out that way. We only stopped at the visitor center and saw one alligator but got eaten alive by mosquitos!!! We didn't go to Flamingo because it was quite a ways and we hadn't made reservations to spend the night. We were worried we'd get stuck in the Everglades at night. I still want to go back for an airboat ride when I have time and bug spray!

Another time we stopped at the other visitor center on that highway straight across southern Florida, heading from Key Largo to Naples near the Indian Casino. It is not part of the main Everglades park, but we saw tons of alligators literally all over the place there...they were across the road, across the walking paths and everywhere in the water. There were some scary looking big black birds too, some type of buzzard I think. It was scary and awesome. Great quick view of the Everglades and it only took about two hours out of our day.

There are no bus options from Miami. The best way is bye rental car. Airboats and wildlife don't mix. Google "Shark Valley" or the "Anhinga Trail" for some better info.

You can't do an airboat ride in the Everglades. They aren't permitted. You have to go outside the Everglades.

Most of the Everglades are not in the National Park, but are owned by the South Florida Water Management District with wildlife and vegetation handled by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. The boundary is, mostly, US highway 41, with the north side state, south side National Park. Airboat rides operated by the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians operate from the north side.

The road from the National Park's main entrance near Homestead to Flamingo makes a good all-day visit. Park rangers organize walks, and there are trails and boardwalks, usually with good opportunities to see birds and other animals. The National Park's website explains.

I should explain a bit more. The boundaries of Everglades National Park were set for political reasons about 1950. Since then, much more land has been placed in another national park (Biscayne), National Wildlife Refuges, State Parks, the Big Cypress National Preserve, and the areas owned by the South Florida Water Management District.

Everglades National Park has many of the best visitor services and facilities. The South Florida Water Management District website explains a great deal about the Everglades, especially water flows.

Obviously the best way to visit is by driving yourself but if you can't do that there are tour companies who operate from Miami though I am not personally recommending them. The wildlife and alligator 'shows' are not how I like to see the wildlife, and the airboats, whilst giving an exhillarating ride tend to scare off most animals.

Here is a link to one www.miamitours.us/…

There are others if you google ' Everglades tours from Miami'.

BlueRusso makes a good suggestion about the Homestead entrance but watch out for the "scary looking black birds" mentioned by katrinabrain which are Turkey vultures as they can damage parts of visitors cars.
