Best area to stay near GNP...

Greetings all - am in the planning mode for a trip to GNP in 2009. We typically like to rent accomodations close to the parks where we can stay a week - with kitchens, views, a couple of bedrooms, etc.

What are the towns closest to Glacier that offer good access, a few good restaurants & some nice western ambiance? We will probably fly in & out of Billings.

Thanks!

Billings is a long day's drive from GNP. Why fly in and out so far away? Kalispell, FCA, is the closest, about 30 minutes away, with Great Falls being next closest.

On the west side of the park, Columbia Falls is the nearest town of any decent size. Whitefish is about 30-40 minutes from the Western entrance, and is a nice town with loads of tourist amenities and charm. Many other options are closer to the park, many posts in this forum talk about various cabin options.

Do try to book your airline tickets closer than the far reaches of Billings!

Esty2006,if you are going to Glacier mostly to hike, consider staying on the east side of the park, because that is where much of the good hiking is located. Vacation homes can be rented in East Glacier, which is a tiny town (1 block) near the entrance to the park. There are a few good restaurants in East Glacier, but not as many activities as on the western side of the park. I haven't been able to find vacation homes in Babb or St.Mary. Good Luck!

I'm staying a couple of nights at Don's Hideway, next week.

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions - lots more research to do. I'm off to Jackson WY, the Tetons & Yellowstone for this year's trip this weekend, and can't wait! More reseach when I return!

Whitfish, MT is a nice town within reasonable distance of the west side of the park ... lodging prices will not be cheap there.
