Trip to Montana

My husband and I are planning a trip to Montana. Neither of us has ever been 'out West'. We will be there 7-l0 days. #l, which airlport should we fly into to see as much as possible. Of course, we would like to visit Glacier National Park and other places of interest that you could suggest. Beautiful scenery, bears at the top of the list. Also, old west towns. Any suggestions you could make would be appreciated. Which city, area would you suggest we stay at for the night?

It is a big state, with lots of options.........................If you want Glacier, then your airport options are likely Missoula, kalispel or Great Falls.

For bears, and Glacier, stay east, and prefrebly in the Many Glacier area.

There is a ghost town/old west town, outside Missoula called Garnet, it is a great photography site and interesting. There may be others, I just don't know them.

The risk here is to try to go to too many places, and end up driving too much and not abosrbing what is right there. I would consider a Missoula, flathead, glacier, great falls and rocky mntn front loop, ending back up in Missoula.

Hopefully others will have some great options for you also.

If money is an issue, since you haven't seen the west before, you could fly into Spokane and drive from there. You have several scenic options from there to Glacier.

Garnet, as mentioned, is a really cool ghost town. Cool in the sense that it is so well preserved for being abandoned.

Another option is Virginia City - just west of Ennis - for a "living ghost town". It has the atmosphere of a booming turn of the century western town and is quite different from GArnet in the sense that it is still an actual town, with businesses, residents, etc. Ennis is also a nice town with a bit of a "wild west" feel to it, although it is certainly much more developed. Note, Ennis and VC would put you very close to Yellowstone NP and so they may be too far away to incorporate into a GNP itinerary.
