Broad strokes of Itinerary: 7 days in Sept 2012

Hi, I've poked around for a while and a plan is taking shape. Let me know where there's room for improvement. Don't want to change lodging too many times and don't want to spend the whole trip in the car.

1. Chicago to Kalispell (hopefully), spend the first night in Apgar.

2. Take our time on GTTSR. Stop to hike around Logan Pass (Hidden Lake). End up at Many Glacier.

3-6. Hike around Many Glacier. Day trip(s) to Waterton or Two Medicine (is overnighting a better idea? I don't want to change lodging too many times.)

7. Head back to the West side, do Highline Trail, head to Whitefish for the night.

8. Return to Chicago.

The other option is to head straight to Many Glacier the first day, stay for 4 nights, then spend 2 nights at Sperry Chalet, 1 in Whitefish, then home.

Depending on the amount of hiking you want to do in Many Glacier, you may not have time to visit Two Medicine and Waterton. Your arrangement of lodging sounds good, but most will suggest that if you can get two nights at Sperry to do your second option. You could still spend the first night in Apgar, drive across the park and stop at Logan and hike either Hidden Lake or part of Highline, three nights at Many, (skip Two Medicine and Waterton and hike at Many), and then Sperry. That would be a great trip!!

Your first night's stay should be based on what time you arrive. If you arrive midday, you can make it to Many Glacier, but that will be a very long travel day, and often the first day of any trip is exhausting due to the effort it takes to get out of your driveway.

A more relaxed approach is to have your first night at Apgar, rest up from the flight or train, then head over GTTS Rd to the east side. Make sure you get here early enough in Sept. that the GTTS Rd is still open. They are closing it earlier for the much-needed construction.

If your flight gets in around midnight, or even late in the evening, book your first night accommodation in Whitefish.

Have fun planning!
