It is on the west side, past Lake McDonald lodge. Well marked parking area. The trail to the lake starts at the Trail Of Cedars. Parking can be a problem mid day.

Definitely want to be there by 10AM during July/August if you don't want to have parking problems....

As noted above, either trial of the cedars, across the creek, or the avalanche campground parking lot, before the creek.

Glacier Park has a free shuttle with a major stop in Avalanche

This trail is crowded during mid summer and the parking area fills up quickly.

Last year there was a major avalanche which opened up the view to mt cannon

from the trail.

The shuttle buses fill up quickly too! Another reason to get there early is if you want to get some good photos before the sun completely rises over the mountains. Here's some good info on the trail:

We took the trail toward the end of May 2011. There was still quite a bit of wet snow on about the last half mile or so. If going at that time of year hiking boots would be helpful along with a walking stick if you're a bit older. Well worth the walk. Even that time of year parking spaces were at a permium.
