Time at entrance to park

Will be staying at Laughlin and visiting South rim on Friday, Mar.21 for day trip.(Good Friday). Is there a line-up when arriving at the park entrance, if so, approx. how much time should be expected once arriving at gate and driving to Desert View observation area?

Was planning on starting at this location, then working our way back to main village for lunch, stopping along the way at look-out areas. Does this seem feasible to do in a few hours, and yet get an appreciation for the scenery that this great park offers?

If you wake up in Laughlin and plan to go in the east gate of the park, it will be close to lunch time when you get there. Gate operations and procedures are such that you shouldn't have to wait in line to get in. Desert View is within a couple hundred yards of the east gate. Allow a couple of hours for stops along the way back to GC Village. Maybe a really late lunch.

Thank-you for the help, however now raising another question a/c you mention 'east' gate. I didn't realize there was more than one main gate. When coming up from Williams, is there any problems finding the east gate or is everything fairly easy to navigate?

Hi

Just keep in mind you're on the road for app. 8 hours doing this loop Laughlin-East entrance-GC Village-South entrance-Laughlin without sightseeing. So start very early.

You said that you planned to start at Desert View. Desert View is just inside the east gate which is off highway 89, no where near Williams.

If you plan to go through Williams and up AZ64 to the Main gate, you will enter the park much closer to the GC Village and you will be about 30 miles away from Desert View.

I suggest that you pull up a map of northern AZ and GCNP to orient yourself.

You're talking about doing a day trip from Laughlin which will be a long day, although very doable. But it will be much easier to make a plan if you have a better idea of where you're going.

Thank-you very much for info...sure clarifies things. Yes, will be coming up from Williams via AZ64. When east gate first mentioned, thought it was also off of AZ64 same as to main gate. Also, didn't realize that Desert View would be this far (30 miles) once inside park. The only reason that Desert View is being considered is the strong reviews received from this forum site suggesting that the views were relatively better than most? If so, don't mind the 30 mile trek.

Thks. again for replies.

AZ64 is the East Rim Drive that goes from the main gate all the way along the east rim and out of the park at Desert View. That's about 30 miles.

You'll want to see the canyon from DV, but if you drive up from Williams it will be impossible to start at DV and not see the canyon before hand.
