Itinerary Suggestion for 4 days @ Grand Canyon

We are a family with 3 children, 11, 7, and 6 year old and spending the week of Easter break heading to the Grand Canyon. We have reservation @ the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel in Williams, train into the Canyon, overnight at the Maswik Lodge,Rim tour, and train return to the GCRH for a final night. We are driving from Southern California and want to take our time driving and seeing as much as we can.... What would you do if you left 1 or 2 days before you had to arrive in Williams... Is there other things for us to see and do that the family would enjoy? Thank you for your recommendations!

Williams itself does not have a lot to offer for kids. But if you drive into Flagstaff which is 40 minutes away there is tons to do. Riordan manion, Museum of N Az, Wupatki Indian ruins/ Sunset crater is only another 40 minutes past flagstaff. There is a lot to do in that area. They also might enjoy going to Sedona for the day. The kids will enjoy the train and you are doing it the best way by staying overnight and then taking it back for more time at the canyon. While there take advantage of the FREE junion ranger programs for kids. Read the sticky at the top of the Grand Canyon forum as well.

I would drive east toward Phoenix area or to Prescott AZ. Then you could take a day to explore Prescott, Jerome, Cottonwood and end up in Sedona. Vegas would be ok.. not as kid friendly as it once was.

Day 1 Drive to Prescott AZ (6-7 hours). Maybe see Joshua Tree along the way. Stay in Prescott.

Day 2 Explore Prescott area, visit Jerome and Cottonwood, then to Sedona for the night.

Day 3 Drive to Williams. Take Train to GC. Stay at Maswik that night

Day 4 Return to Williams. Spend the night.

Day 5 Head back to So Cal

I like CasaAzul's itinerary, except that on day 2 I would spend little or no time in Cottonwodd and try to get to Sedona sooner.
